Visualizing sound through letter shapes

This project is an exploration of both visualization techniques as well as new technologies. The sound simulated by the website is that of a theremin, an early electronic instrument synthesizing pure notes through hand movements. The letters are animated (and interacted with) by variable font technology, a new development introduced with the newest version of OpenType. On a different note, that’s also what is powering the pink glitter on this website.

Conceptually, the variables to move along with the varying tones of the simulated theremin are chosen based on theories within sound symbolism as well as the interpolation theory of Gerrit Noordzij.

But honestly, enough talk, see it in action!
